A precision rifle is only as good as the optic system sitting on top of it. Choosing the right scope and mount combination is critical to getting the most out of your platform.
Scope Selection
Magnification
For long-range precision, a minimum of 10x magnification is recommended. Most serious precision shooters run 5-25x or 7-35x variable power scopes. Higher magnification helps with target identification and precise aiming at distance.
Reticle
Mil-based reticles are the standard in precision shooting. They allow for quick holdover corrections and range estimation. First focal plane (FFP) reticles maintain accuracy at any magnification.
Turret Quality
Reliable, repeatable turrets are essential. Your turrets need to track accurately through their entire adjustment range and return to zero consistently.
Mount Selection
Why Mounts Matter
The best scope in the world is useless if the mount doesn't hold it securely and consistently. A quality mount must:
- Maintain zero under recoil
- Provide consistent return to zero if removed and replaced
- Offer appropriate height for proper cheek weld
- Include correct MOA cant for your intended range
Cant and Height
For long-range shooting, a 20 MOA canted base is standard. This provides additional elevation adjustment for extreme distances. Mount height should allow a natural, consistent cheek weld.
